Differences Between Pannus and Thrombus in Prosthetic Heart Valve Dysfunction

18 May 2021

After surgical replacement of heart valve, close monitoring and follow up are necessary to evaluate the patient's condition. In prosthetic heart valve (PHV), dysfunction could arise from structural problem of the valve or other non-structural causes. One of the dysfunction that could be found is obstruction to the PHV.

Entrapment of prosthetic valve occluder could cause valve dysfunction that leads to complications. Differentiation between thrombosis and pannus as two of the PHV obstruction causes remains a challenging issue. Thrombus formation is the most common obstruction of mechanical prostheses, while incidence of pannus formation causing prosthesis obstruction is similar in biological and mechanical prosthesis.

Distinguishing the causes of obstruction is important in deciding the appropriate therapy for each cases.
